12 dairies in Kabale closed due to poor hygiene

Dairy Development Authority-DDA has closed twelve diaries in Kabale municipality over poor hygiene and selling adulterated milk.

The dairies were closed on Friday in a joint operation involving officials from Dairy Development Authority, Kabale District Veterinary Officer and Police.

The affected dairies include Kabale Tukore Dairy, Kigezi Dairy Cooperative Society, Rwakaraba Fresh Milk Center, Ambroze Fresh Dairy, Namanya Fresh Dairies, Babasa Dairy, Lords Mercy Diary, Sheilah Dairy, Zack Diary, Hleb Dairy, Asiimwe Fresh Milk and Trustable Dairy.

The dairies were found operating in unhygienic places and unregistered premises. The workers of the diaries were also found working without uniforms, protective gear and health certificates.

Steven Aikiriza, the Coordinator Dairy Development Authority South Western Region, says that he was shocked to find that 80 percent of the dairies in Kabale Municipality were selling adulterated milk, which exposes consumers to the risk of catching diseases.

He says only Beatrice Dairy Farm-BDF and Honest dairies fulfilled the operational requirements. Aikiriza says they have ordered the proprietors of the closed dairies to report to police to make their statements, saying they will appear before court.

An employee of Kigezi Dairy Cooperative Society, who spoke to URN on condition of anonymity, blames farmers for supplying them with adulterated milk mixed with water.

He explains that at times they don't check the milk supplied by the farmers.
