Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) and ATC Uganda have convened ICT infrastructure sector players to discuss the pressing challenge of Vandalism of ICT infrastructure. Sector players have expressed concern over the pressing challenge of the Vandalism of ICT infrastructure.

In recent years, Uganda has experienced a concerning rise in vandalism incidents directed at crucial telecom infrastructure, posing serious threats to both national development and public safety. Recognizing that critical infrastructure serves as the backbone of everyday life, including health, safety, security, and economic prosperity, authorities emphasize the grave consequences of any disruption or destruction to these systems. Dr Aminah Zawedde, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of ICT and National Guidance, who was also the Chief Guest, said vandalism of ICT infrastructure not only undermines the integrity of the sector but also hinders national progress.

Speaking during the forum, Hon. Nyombi Thembo, Executive Director Uganda Communications Commission said vandalism threatens Uganda connectivity and called on Ugandans to remain vigilant. “The surge in incidents of vandalism targeting critical telecom infrastructure is very concerning. These acts pose serious threats to both national development and public safety,” he said. He called upon relevant government authorities to designate all ICT infrastructure as critical national infrastructure and set stringent laws to deter vandals from sabotaging the sector.

According to Dorothy Kabagambe, Chief Executive Officer ATC Uganda, the Stakeholder Forum on Vandalism aims to mobilize collective action and forge partnerships to safeguard the integrity of the country's ICT infrastructure. “Critical infrastructure forms the backbone of our daily lives, impacting health, safety, security, and economic prosperity. Any disruption or destruction of these systems has grave consequences. As stewards of Uganda’s progress, we must safeguard these vital assets,” she said, adding: “Telecom infrastructure is our lifeline.

By elevating the status of telecom infrastructure, stakeholders aim to strengthen security measures and enhance coordination among relevant authorities to prevent and address acts of vandalism effectively.

Through collaborative efforts, Uganda seeks to advance its digital agenda, promote financial inclusion, and foster sustainable development across various sectors of the economy. The forum represents a pivotal moment in Uganda's ongoing efforts to combat vandalism and protect its ICT infrastructure. By fostering dialogue, sharing best practices, and mobilizing resources, stakeholders aim to chart a course towards a more resilient and secure telecom infrastructure landscape in Uganda.
