UBOS Ready to Conduct National Census

The Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) has revealed that it has designed different questions for the various groups of people that will be asked during the forthcoming national housing and population census.

The census will cover all categories of people who include the homeless people and other special groups.

The National Population and Housing Census will be conducted for 10 days starting on 10th to 19th May 2024 across the country while the census night will be Thursday May 9, 2024. 10th May 2024 has been gazetted as a public holiday and Ugandans encouraged to stay at home to facilitate smooth start of enumeration exercise.

According to James Muwonge, the Director Methodology and Statistics at UBOS, there are separate questions for street children, men and women, night shift workers and Ghetto people as well.

“The census exercise is for everyone who will have slept in Uganda on the night of 9th . Whether you are Ugandan, refugee, American, or Chinese you'll be counted. And those on transit like at Airport, there will be mechanism to count them from the airport as well as truck drivers,” Muwonge says.

He notes that the questions will include the number of people in a household, where the household is located, how the household is living, what they own and access to government services.

" We assure the general public that the information collected will be kept confidential”.

He also noted that currently, training of enumerators is ongoing and by Wednesday they will have completed training together with their supervisors.

Dr Albert Byamugisha the chairperson of board of directors UBOS revealed that the government of Uganda has injected in shs320 billion to conduct census, and they have bought 120,000 tablets to be used to capture data in the counting exercise.

He added that after the census, the tablets will be given out to government agencies like NIRA, Electoral Commission, Parish Development Model, Local Government offices and the districts.
