Nkozi hospital looking for funds to expand causality ward

Nkozi hospital is hunting for funds to construct a new causality unit. The available casualty unit is overwhelmed by the high number of accident victims received at the unit. At least 30 accident victims are rushed at Nkozi hospital on a weekly basis.

Nkozi hospital is located at Kayabwe in Mpigi district along Masaka - Kampala highway, which makes it very busy because of numerous accidents. The Catholic founded hospital lacks several equipment such as x-ray, scan and sufficient medical personnel.

It also works as a teaching hospital for students of Masters of Science in Health Services management.  On Monday, our reporter visited Nkozi hospital and found several patients crammed in the causality ward.

Sister Maria Clara Nabikolo, the senior Administrator, Nkozi Hospital, says due to lack of space, they attend some of the patients in need of emergency attention in the common room.

Sister Nabikolo, says the hospital is privately owned, they don't make any profits because they charge patients a modest fee.  She says they are hunting for Shillings 3 billion to construct a befitting casualty complex with the necessary facilities.

Aloysius Kabanda, a resident of Kayabwe in Nkozi Sub County survived a deadly accident with his wife last year. According to Kabanda, he was riding his wife on a motorcycle when a Rakai bound taxi swerved off the road and knocked them.

Kabanda explains that his wife got entangled in the taxi and forcefully pulled from the wreckage. According to Kabanda, they were rushed to Nkozi hospital but they couldn't attend to them due to lack of the necessary equipment.

Manisuli Kiyemba, another resident of Mpigi, says they need a casualty complex at Nkozi Hospital. He says being the only nearby hospital, there is need to have a modern casualty complex where they can get treatment.

Nkozi hospital has organised a fundraising marathon at Equator Kayabwe slated for June 17th, 2017. The Tanzanian led forces bombed part of the hospital building in 1979. The buildings have never been reconstructed since then. Nkozi hospital was built in the 1950s.
