NRM shines in newly created Rubanda District

National Resistance Movement party candidates have swept the polls in the newly created Rubanda District. NRM's Prossy Mbabazi Akampurira was declared Rubanda woman MP, elect with 32700 votes.

Her closest rival, Independent candidate Hilder Kabarungyi Karuhize polled 19486 votes, Forum for Democratic Change-FDC party candidate Vastine Katushabe came third with 3670 votes. Kenneth Jogo Biryabarema, the NRM candidate took the LC V chairperson seat.

He got 32,890 votes ahead of his independent rival, Stephen Kasyaba Ampeire who polled 28,845 votes. FDC's Joseph Ruhangariyo came third with 1172 votes, while independent candidate, Nelson Habasa trailed the pack with 316 votes.

Ismail Atwijukyire, the Rubanda District Returning Officer, declared the polls results in the wee hours of this morning amidst tight security. Ely Maate, the Kigezi Region Police spokesperson, says the heavy deployment was meant to maintain peace.

Joseph Nguza Biribonwa, the Deputy Electoral Commission Chairperson, says the exercise was peaceful.  He asked the winners to work together if they are to realise development in the new district.

Shortly after being declared elected, both Prossy Mbabazi Akampurira and Kenneth Jogo Biryabarema promised to advocate for the improvement of education, health and road sectors in the district.

None of the losers of the polls has commented as they were away from the polling center during the declaration of the poll results.
