Open defecation has largely been eliminated

Open defecation has largely been eliminated in the district of Buyende Eastern Uganda.

This has been done through promotion of community led sanitation based on stimulating a collective sense of disgust and shame among community members which is championed by Plan International.

Mr. Kiiza Samuel Andrew Wash Technical Lead at Plan international says the community has been engaged in walks through villages during which they ask them to show the cleanest and dirtiest places or homes.

This walk is also aimed at naming and shaming those engaged in Open defecation.

Other methods included encouraging and supporting the public to build toilets, plate stands and a hand washing facility used after visiting the toilet.
