Police saves murder suspect from angry mob

An angry mob has lynched a murder suspect and injured another seriously in Rubanda district. The mob descended on 34-year-old William Mugisha at his home in Ihunga cell in Ikumba Sub County and beat him to death on Wednesday.

The mob also attacked another suspect Robert Balikese and attempted to lynch him but he was rescued by police. The two are believed to have been part of the group that killed John Byarugaba, a teacher at Ihunga primary school located in Muko Sub County, whose decomposing body was found dumped in a bush in Bisiizi cell on December 21st, 2016.

They were picked up together with two others whose identities were not made public. On Tuesday this week, High Court released Mugisha, Balikese and two others on grounds that the Director of Public Prosecutions had cleared their file.

The release of the suspects didn't go down well with residents prompting them to raid Mugisha's home and lynch him. They also tried to attack Baliseka but he was rescued by Police.

Silva Baguma, the Ikumba Sub County LC V Councilor, says the residents attacked the trio, saying they had bribed their way from prison. Ely Maate, the Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson, says Baliseka is nursing injuries at Kabale Regional Referral Hospital.

He says they have launched a manhunt for the mob members to face charges of taking the law into their hands.
