Mumbere was picked up during a military offensive on his palace in Kasese on Sunday and was airlifted to Kampala before he was relocated to Nalufenya detention facility in Jinja district.
On Tuesday evening, Mumbere appeared before the Jinja Chief Magistrate's court for the murder of a Police Constable, Geoffrey Kasimba.
Asked to comment on the arrest of Mumbere, Rev. Geoffrey Kyomuhendo, the Spokesperson of Obundingiya Bwa Bamba Cultural institution in Bundibugyo district, said government has reasons why the Omusinga was arrested.
"Government has reasons why Mumbere was arrested as an institution we can't comment. The state should investigate why the conflicts keep occurring every year," Kyomuhendo said.
Since the installation of Lt. Col. Martin Kamya, the cultural leader of the Obudhingya Bwa Bwamba, there have been ethnic conflicts between the Bamba and Bakonzo especially in Bundibugyo district.
In Tooro the Kingdom Premier, Bernard Tungwako refused to comment on the arrest of Mumbere, saying that they are still studying the situation in Kasese. He however urged government and Rwenzururu kingdom to dialogue so that the conflicts in the region come to an end.
He also said that the creation of different cultural institutions in the region is responsible for the conflicts. The Bakonzo and the Batooro have had a strained relationship since 1966, when the Bamba and the Bakonzo formed the Rwenzururu movement and waged war against Tooro.
The Bamba and Bakonzo walked out of the Tooro parliament to form Rwenzururu rebellion accusing Tooro of mistreatment. Tooro Kingdom has in the past criticized government for the creation of cultural institutions in the region.
In 2014, King Oyo Nyimba Iguru Rukidi IV, declared four days of fasting to protest government's decision to create more kingdoms within the greater Tooro monarchy.
Kingdom authorities argue that the creation of Obusinga Bwa Rwenzururu in Kasese and Obudhingya Bwa Bamba in Bundibugyo has divided and weakened the power and supremacy of Tooro Kingdom.
The then Tooro Kingdom Premier, Steven Kaliba said that the new kingdoms were formed without consulting the mother kingdom. He said that the creation of the two kingdoms has led to ethnic clashes and yet the Batooro, Bakonzo and Bamba and other tribes were living harmoniously before the creation of the cultural institutions.
