Uganda has announced it will stop transferring test samples to foreign country for laboratory diagnostics and surveillance.

This comes after Uganda achieved the second Best practice in laboratory medicine Award by The African Society of Laboratory Medicine (ASLM).

The Ministry of Health Head of Central Public Laboratories, Dr. Steven Aisu says they are soon to start carrying their laboratory tests and surveillance for all kind of diseases include cancer.

Laboratory services have for long been neglected in most developing countries including Uganda despite their pivotal role in quality health services and disease surveillance.

However, the Minister for Health Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng says Makerere University–Johns Hopkins University Core Laboratory (MU-JHU) located at the Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) in the Mulago Hospital complex received the winner award titled “World Class monitoring and appraisal of quality indicators” in South Africa from the African Society of Laboratory Medicine (ASLM).

She says that this collaborates with Governments and other relevant partners to advocate for the critical needs of laboratory services, development of national laboratory associations, and implementation of the policies of the World Health Organization (WHO) and national health agencies that provide the basis for quality laboratory services.
