UNREST IN SOUTH AFRICA’S CAPITAL

The political unrest in South Africa’s capital continues. A special army unit is reported to be on standby but the government has said the army will only be deployed as a last resort.

The ANC will be holding special meeting around South Africa today to discuss the unrest. Dozens of vehicles were torched as angry protesters took to the streets on Monday and Tuesday, angry about the ANC’s choice of a mayoral candidate.

At least one person has been killed and 20 criminal cases opened. Its likely scenes of violence will continue to play out through this week.

In another province, a politician’s home has been petrol bombed. It’s the latest in a string of politically related crimes ahead of the August municipal elections. The government last month set up a task team to deal with such crimes.
