Arua teachers miss pay for pay for three months
Over 2,500 teachers in Arua district have gone three months without salary.
The teachers have not received their salary from September to November 2015. An additional 44 teachers have missed salary for six months.
The Arua Chief Administrative Officer, Esau Ekachalen told Uganda Radio Network that out of 4,600 teachers in the district, about 2,500 missed salary and were planning to demonstrate.
Ekachalen says the affected teachers are those whose Tax Identification Numbers were not correctly captured. He adds that other teachers were affected by the transfers.
He says they have started verifying the details of those who missed salary, and will write to the ministry to effect payment.
Phillip Andama, the Uganda National Teachers Union chairperson in Arua Municipality says some teachers have failed to pay back loans borrowed from the banks.
Andama tells Uganda Radio Network that many teachers now survive on borrowing money from friends, while others are forced to buy items on credit from shops and pay later.
