NEW BILL OUTLAWING DISCRIMINATION AGAINST ALBINISM IN THE OFFING

By Gloria Nakiyimba

Hon Shyrose Bhanji of the East African Legislative Assembly has been granted leave to introduce  the EAC Protection of people with albinism Bill, 2016. The Bill is to prohibit the discrimination against people suffering with albinism and to ensure affirmative action in their favor.

It also stipulates the sanctions against those who indulge in suffocating the rights of persons with Albinism.  The mover the bill Bhanji hopes that if passed, the bill will put in place sanctions including conviction of those who discriminate against albinos. She says the Bill seeks to eliminate all forms of discrimination of persons with albinism on grounds of their disability.

Hundreds of Albinos have lost their lives to the hands of witch doctors who seek their lives in hope that they can make people wealthy. The ritual sacrifice of albinos is most common in Tanzania. Members of the assembly are currently meeting Kampala to deliberate on different matters concerning the regional block.
