NGO Chapter four case hearing adjourned to January 2022
- Chapter Four says the decision to ban them was irrational
- 54 NGOs were suspended by the government of Uganda
Kampala High Court Musa Ssekaana has adjourned to the 11th of January 2022, further mention of a case in which Chapter 4 Uganda a non governmental Organisation sued government over alleged unlawful suspension of their work in Uganda.
Today, lawyers of Chapter 4 Uganda and the Attorney General represented by Charity Nabasa appeared in court and the judge gave them up to the 12th December to file their written submissions.
The case followed a decision by the National Bureau for non governmental Organisations to ban them from operating in the country.
The NGO however says that the said decision was irrational, unreasonable and unlawful and wants the High Court to vacate it.
The government suspended 54 NGOs including Chapter 4 Uganda that later sued the attorney General over the matter in October this year.
On the 8th of August, this year, the NGO bureau issued a communication closing down the affected NGOs accusing them of non compliance with the 2016 NGO act.
The Applicant was accused of failing to file its annual returns for the year 2020.On the 20th of August 2021, the government through the National Bureau of Non-governmental Organisations in the minister of Internal affairs suspended 54 NGOs .
The said Bureau is mandated to register, regulate, monitor, inspect, coordinate and oversee all actives of NGOs in Uganda.
