Atiak Sugar Factory has kicked off the planting of sugarcane on the already cleared cane fields, the Director Communications Benson Ongom revealed.

He explained that a quarter of the cane fields have so far been cleared however they are targeting to clear a total of 4,150 hectares.

Ongom added that the planted canes are expected to take between 10 to 13 months to mature and their harvest will then proceed to sugar production by mid-2025.

He stated that among other focused activities between January and February 2024 include the installation of irrigation facilities.

He noted that among the 62 Centre pivots that are expected to be installed in the fields, 42 have already been installed.

“The Irrigation facilities will be able to irrigate 4,150 hectares of cane fields, this is to among other things keep the fields as green as possible throughout the seasons and manage fire outbreaks that have greatly affected the progress of the project” Ongom narrated.

He added   that the construction of the dam that is anticipated to hold about 600 million litres of water to facilitate the irrigation facilities already commenced.

Ongom noted that the project area has significant physical features such as hills, swamps and a river.” All these are expected to feed the dam with water to supply the centre pivots” he stressed.

He further said that they have opened the 6.2-kilometer main road Bibia Gate 2 that links the sugar factory to Gulu South Sudan Highway is complete however their still ongoing activities including road bed, subgrade levelling together with opening feeder access roads within the farm.

Atiak Sugar Factory is situated 17 km from the Gulu-Nimule road in Amuru district . It is a subsidiary of Horyal Investment s Holding Company Limited commissioned in October 2020 and has an annual production capacity of 66,000 tones.
