The families of two National Unity Platform (NUP) supporters, Bobi Young and Achileo Kivumbi, are holding onto hope as their bail hearings approach. Both men, who are facing charges in the military court martial in Makindye, have had their cases delayed, with new hearing dates set for the coming weeks.

Bobi Young’s bail hearing has been rescheduled for September 24, while Achileo Kivumbi’s hearing is now set for October 21. The delays have added to the anxiety of their families, who are eagerly awaiting a potential release on bail.

Kampala Woman Member of Parliament and Shadow Human Rights Minister, Hon. Shamim Malende, visited the two jailed NUP supporters at Luzira Upper Prison. Speaking after her visit, Malende reassured the families that the legal team is doing everything possible to secure their release.

“We checked on comrades Bobi Young and Achileo Kivumbi, and we are hopeful that their release on bail will come soon. We continue to support their families and ensure that their rights are upheld during this difficult time,” Malende stated.

“They ( Court Martial) did not proceed having told us that they had gone to bury the dead generals which led to their dates being re-fixed, ” Malende revealed.

The detention of NUP supporters has drawn criticism from opposition figures and human rights activists, who accuse the government of using military courts to silence political dissent. The NUP, led by former presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine, has been at the forefront of these protests.

As the bail hearings draw closer, the families of the two men are hopeful that their prayers for release will be answered, allowing their loved ones to return home after months in detention.
