38 year old Mercy Timbitwire  working at the NRM party secretariate , has been remanded to Luzira Prison following a viral video that captured her slapping a traffic officer.

The incident has sparked widespread outrage and raised questions about accountability among public officials.

Timbitwire appeared in court alongside Benardine Abangira, an administrator at Berger Rite Holdings, before Nakawa Chief Magistrate Elias Kakooza.

 

Both individuals denied the charges of robbery, assault, and various traffic offenses.

According to the prosecution, the events unfolded on October 18, 2024.

Timbitwire allegedly drove recklessly while using a handheld mobile phone, refusing to comply with directives from a police officer on duty at MUBS in Kampala.

Later, at the UMA Show Grounds in Lugogo, she reportedly assaulted Police Constable Charles Makawa while driving a Land Cruiser (UBM/439T), which lacked a valid third-party insurance license.

The prosecution claims that during the altercation, Timbitwire used physical violence to rob PC Makawa of two mobile phones valued at 800,000 shillings, as well as an EPS gadget; a property of the Uganda Police Force, estimated at 14 million shillings.

In a separate charge, Abangira is accused of being an accessory after the fact, allegedly assisting Timbitwire in avoiding punishment while knowing she had committed multiple offenses.
