The decision was agreed upon by KCCA councilors in a special sitting at City hall on Monday. It was chaired by Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago.
According to the resolutions of the council, the vendors will operate from 5pm to 10pm at Nakivubo Road, Allen Road, Nakivubo mews, Mackay Road and Kafumbe Mukasa Road.
A select committee has also been established to review the roads ideal to host the vendors, appropriate charges and modalities for issuing out permits to street vendors and hawkers.
The committee, composed of the three councilors in Kampala Central Division, the chairperson of the committee of gender, chairperson committee Revenue and that on Public health, will also work with Police to iron out security and traffic related issues arising out of the presence of vendors on the streets.
The committee has been given two weeks to work and report back to the council.
On the question of sanitation for the vendors, the councilors resolved that the street vendors will use KCCA toilet facilities, manage their garbage well and operate strictly under the directive of the council.
Kajumba Umaru, a Councillor representing Makindye West notes that they were against the directive that the vendors vacate immediately.
Yusuf Mutabazi, a vendor welcomed the decision saying the decision to send them off the streets is inappropriate. Mutabaazi adds that since street vendors have existed over time, they should be allowed to trade freely on the streets of Kampala.
There are over 1900 vendors in Kampala city according to statistics from KCCA.
