Buganda Road Chief Magistrate's Court has ordered for the immediate release of four staffs of Matrich Holdings Limited, a private company dealing in minerals, who were recently reportedly arrested by the military in relation to a gold theft scandal.

The personnel Gilbert Bigirimana, Arnold Lubega, Frank Mushaija and Edrisa Nsimbe Kamugisha, were allegedly arrested and tortured by the UPDF political commissar, Col. Felix Kulayigye, according to a complaint lodged by Kampala businessman Richard Kamugisha.

The scandal started on June 20, after Brenda Murungi, Kulayigye's niece visited the offices of Matrich Holdings, a company owned by Kamugisha, in Ntinda, to test gold that she was interested in buying from a Congolese businessman. She paid 200 US Dollars (671,600 Shillings) for testing the two kilogrammes of Gold.

But Murungi later stated that the gold, estimated at 60,000 US Dollars (201,480,000 Shillings) had been stolen at the premises, leading to the arrest of the four individuals who are currently under police detention.

Grade One Magistrate Marion Mangeni has ordered that the suspects be released since they have already spent more than the mandatory 48 hours in detention without trial. She directed that the suspects be produced in courts of law as an alternative.

A copy of the order was sent to the DPC Wandegeya and DPC Central Police Station. The Inspector General of police John William Okalany confirmed receiving the order and has forwarded it for compliance to commander Kampala Metropolitan Police.
