Cravings gone wrong #Beststartinlife

I was in shock when I saw her asking for an ice cold beer, glaring at her with a quizzical face, she responded reluctantly, “I know”

Resty is a longtime friend, when we were getting crazy and trying out things left right and center. She kept her composure and never did the things we did. Back in our campus days, alcohol was a common sight. It was very okay to see someone drinking alcohol at whatever time of the day. Resty did not take any alcohol and often told us to stop taking alcohol.

Here she was ordering for an ice cold Beer, at worst while she was pregnant. “I have this craving I can’t avert, I just feel like taking beer all day every day.” She said

I asked her whether she knew the dangers of alcohol on her health and the baby. She was absolutely positive but said she couldn’t help.

It is normal for pregnant women like Resty  to crave for all types of food, smells, drinks, even things they have never eaten before says Dr. Herman Ssewagudde a gynecologist . Though many of these cravings result from lack of certain micro nutrients but are also due to a hormone in the placenta that signals a pregnant mother’s brain to desire certain things.

The danger however is in a pregnant mother craving things that may be harmful to her health later on the health of the baby. “As doctors we always encourage mothers to suppress some of those cravings especially  toxic things like drugs, cigarettes, alcohol among other things.” Adds Dr. Ssewagudde.

Well as most mothers crave for soil, the most common type of soil the crave for is the processed clay. This type is no dangerous and is rich in iron, though there are supplements for these nutrients are available. Says Ssewagudde.

For mothers who crave for foods, fruits and vegetables that are important to the body, Ssewagudde encourages them to have as much as they can because pregnant women always feed for two.
