The two incarcerated opposition MPs Muhammad Ssegirinya and Allan Ssewanyana have asked have told the court that they want Parliament to postpone the ongoing search for a new Speaker of Parliament until they have secured bail to allow them to compete in the said race.

The Kawempe North and Makindye West legislators today, returned before Mukono Chief Magistrate Court for further mention of their murder case, however, the prosecution Informed court that despite investigations being ready, the committal papers were not ready.

Through their lawyers led by Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, Kampala Woman MP Shamim Malwmde, and MP Asuman Basalirwa, the MPs asked court to grant them bail to allow them to compete.

 

Sewanyana told court that he wants to stand for the position of Speaker of Parliament, while, Ssegirinya told court that he will stand for the position of deputy speaker.

They have further been remanded to Kitalya government prison as they await the DPP to prepare committal papers to have them sent to the High Court to face murder and terrorism charges.

Prosecution states that on the night of 23/8/2021, unknown assailants attacked Masaka district and hacked several people to death and that on the next day,  two people including Mugerwa Francis Kizza and Kakoza Sulaiman were found dead and their bodied were dumped on the road in Settaala village and another person identified as Ssebyoto Ronald was attacked in the same village, but survived with injuries on his head.

According to the prosecution, on the 4th day of August 2021, the MPs killed a one Bwanika Joseph of Kisekka B Village, Kankamba Parish, Lwengo District, and that on the 23rd of August at Ssenya Village, in the Masaka City, with malice aforethought killed Kiyimba Tadeo at Ssettaala Village. 

They are also said to have participated in the murder of Slaiman Kakooza, Michael Kizza Nswa on August 23rd 2021, at Ssetaala Village, Kimaya, Kabonera division.

 They were remanded on the 8th of September 2021 after they were arrested at Masaka police station where they had gone for the second day to make police statements on the infamous 'bijambiya' killings in Masaka district. These have since been denied bail
