Nakivubo stadium reopening excites Ugandans

Nakivubo War Memorial Stadium also known as Hamz Stadium was officially reopened in style on 1st /June/2024 after years of reconstruction.

Sports enthusiasts and entertainment seekers alike flocked to the venue to witness the festivities.

The day promised a diverse array of sporting activities and entertainment, starting with basketball matches featuring teams like KIU Titans, JT Jaguars, Nam Blazers, and UCU Canons. Netball fans also had their share of excitement with matches between KCCA, Weyonje, and NIC.

Football, deeply rooted in Ugandan sports culture, took center stage as URA battled Kitara and SC Villa clashed with Express in test matches. Coaches and players expressed their anticipation and excitement for the opportunity to showcase their talent on this prestigious stage.

But it was not just about traditional sports; boxing and kickboxing fans had something to look forward to as well. Female boxers Zahara Nandawula and Flavia Babirye, along with male boxers Isaac Junior Ssenyange and Abas Sseguya engaged in thrilling matches. Kickboxing icons Moses Golola and Umar Semata’s highly anticipated rematch added to the excitement, promising intense action and rivalry.

The musical lineup for the event was also impressive, with performances from renowned artists such as Bebe Cool, Eddy Kenzo, Sheebah Karungi, David Lutalo, Fik Fameica, Rema Namakula, and Alien Skin, among others.

The multipurpose stadium was established in 1926 on the land donated by Daudi Chwa II, the then Kabaka of Buganda, it was closed down in 2017 to pave the way for its renovation and has now undergone a remarkable transformation.

 The stadium now boasts an all-seater design, an artificial playing surface, netball courts, a basketball court, a boxing arena, a gym, and VIP executive boxes, among other impressive features.

Nakivubo was rehabilitated by Ugandan businessman Hamis Kiggundu and was officially commissioned by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni on Thursday, 25th/ April/2024.
