MINISTRY OF FINANCE ASKED NOT TO ALOACTE FUNDS

By Alice Lubwama

The Equal Opportunities Commission has directed the ministry of finance not to appropriate funds to sectors that have not complied with gender and equity requirements for the financial year 2017/18.

The Public Finance Management Act requires all Government ministries, departments and agencies to cater for different needs and interests of all people in their budget frame work papers, before they are issued a certificate of gender and equity compliance.

The chairperson of the Equal Opportunities Commission, Sylvia Muwebwa Ntambi says that parliament will have to withhold the budgets of all sectors until they meet the gender and equity requirements.

Out of the 101 sectors that submitted the ministerial policy statements for assessment to the commission, 22 will not be allocated funds for failure to meet the gender equity requirements.

Among the sectors that performed below the 50% score include Makerere university, Uganda aids commission, National environmental authority, Uganda bureau of statistics, Uganda coffee development authority, missions abroad such as Bujumbura, England, Denmark, Germany, china among others.
