Government halts creation of districts ahead of elections

By Moses Kidandi

The Government has explained that it has no plans to create more districts as alleged by some politicians. The statement from the prime minister follows concerns by the Electoral commission Chairman Justice Simon Byabakama who appealed to the government to stop creating more districts towards the electoral period as it interferes with the demarcation process of polling stations.

The prime minister who was speaking at the launch of preparations for the 2020/2021 General Elections explained that the current districts will remain intact and that there will be no more creation of district’s except if its very necessary.

The Strategic Plan and Roadmap by the Electoral commission will enable the Commission and various stakeholders in the electoral process to achieve better planning, implementation and activity coordination as well as timely implementation of scheduled electoral activities.
The Chairperson of the Uganda Human rights commission Medi Sozi Kagwa has advised government to speed up the process of gazetting the already created districts to enable the Electoral commission plan in time.

The Strategic Plan and Roadmap are also designed to enhance transparency in the implementation of electoral programme and activities.
