Key challenges faced by USAFI market traders

By Wasswa Deo

Kampala city lord mayor Elias Lukwago has held consultative meeting with traders operating in USAFI market to hear issues that are affecting them.

Lukwago pledges to help them compile a detailed report that Kampala Capital City Authority will present to the parliament.

The key challenges mentioned include, the question of over 20billion Uganda shillings outstanding balance of purchase price of the market by KCCA from the owner Umar Ssekamate, of 7500 people who registered and paid for spaces and stalls in market only 2840 were catered for, leaving a balance of 4660 traders  outside the arrangement.

The consultation meeting  followed, the Presidential Affairs Committee of Parliament summoning the  Kampala leadership including the Executive Director Kampala Capital City Authority -KCCA, the Lord Mayor and Minister of Kampala over the pending payments of  USAFI Market.

The core issue is on investigating and examining the modalities surrounding the purchase of USAFI Market, where it emerged recently that some members have been forcefully pushed out and stopped from carrying on business from the premises.
