Court of Appeal upholds the election of Mary Babirye Kabanda

By Sania Babirye

The court of Appeal has upheld the election of Mary Babirye Kabanda as woman member of parliament for Masaka.

Justice Remy Kasule, Richard Buteera and Elizabeth Musoke of the court of appeal this morning unanimously dismissed a petition filed by NRM’s Freda Mubanda seeking to nullify the election on grounds that she lacked evidence to prove her claims of electoral mal practices, alleged ballot staffing, voter bribery and falsification of results.

The Justices have also ordered Mubanda to pay Kabanda both the high court and court of appeal costs of the suit.

Mubanda had alleged that on the 18th of Feb 2016 during voting Hon.  Babirye through her agents distributed salt, money, exercise books and sugar as an inducement to bribe voters to elect her.
