New energy management system expected to slash costs

The ministry of Energy and Mineral Development has launched ISO 5001 Energy management system support programme that is intended to establish the structure and discipline to implement technical and management strategies that significantly cut energy costs and sustain those savings through continuous improvements.

In her speech read by James Baanabe Isingoma Assistant Director Energy Resource’s development, the Minister for Energy and Mineral Development Irene Muloni said that effective energy management isn’t just good for business but also becoming a requirement; therefore the best way to achieve it is with ISO 50001 Energy Management standards.

She said that the programme will be implemented under the theme, "Energy Cost Reduction through effective energy management" that will help organizations in improving efficiency, energy use and consumption, facilitate reduction of green house gas emissions and other adverse impacts from energy use.

According to Baanabe, with energy costs and the importance attributed to climate change having risen over the past several years, management has become paramount.

Energy management system standard is a published structure or framework which may decide to use to develop your EnMS.

Uganda has adopted the ISO 50001 Energy management systems-requirements with guidance for use which is an internationally recognized energy management standard outlining a framework for improving energy performances.

ISO 50001 Energy Management standard is an international standard that outlines energy management practices that are considered to be the best globally.
