Game rangers in trouble for shooting a poacher

Four Uganda Wildlife Authority-UWA game rangers have been arrested for shooting a resident to death. The deceased is a 40-year-old Jonas Abiyingoma, a resident of Nyagakenke Village in Muramba Sub County, Kisoro District.

It's alleged that the rangers shot Abiyingoma on April 23, 2018. They accused him of trespassing into Mgahinga National park in Kisoro District illegally to poach animals.

Later, locals stormed the office of the Resident District Commissioner protesting the act and argued that the deceased had gone into the park, to collect firewood. The protest led to the arrest of the game rangers last evening.

Kisoro Resident District Commissioner Shafik Ssekandi says that the suspects' firearms were impounded for analysis.

Kisoro District Police Commander Charles Okotto says that the suspects are being held at Kisoro police station to aid investigations. Okotto declined to reveal identities of the suspects saying that it can jeopardize investigations.
