CCTV cameras are effective in fighting crime :Namaye

The Uganda police force reports that 60% of the CCTV camera's have been installed since the project started early this year in Kampala metropolitan.

The cameras have so far been installed in 1940 out of 3233 cameras in Kampala metropolitan area.

After the brutal murder of AIGP Andrew Felix Kaweesi, together with his bodyguard and driver by unknown assailants in Kulambiro, a Kampala suburb in March 2017, President Museveni ordered for installation of Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras along major highways, towns and cities all over the country to help curb crime.

Addressing the press today at police headquarters Naguru, the deputy police spokesperson Polly Namaye said that so far installations of Cameras is on going in areas of Katwe, CPS, Old Kampala, Jinja road , Kawempe, Kajjansi , Nateete among other division that make Kampala metropolitan . This work is expected to be completed in December.

The police spokesperson said since the installation works started, they have continued to record successes in terms of fighting criminality using the CCTV cameras.

“So far, with the help of these cameras, we have had successes in 27 incidents around CPS in Kampala, eight incidents around Katwe, six around Old Kampala and seven incidents around Wandegeya ,” Namaye said.

She further says phase two of the installation is intended to cover surveillance systems of municipalities, highways and major towns a cross the country.

Namaye adds that the training of operators, commanders and technicians is on going .

During the same Press briefing Namaye revealed that, a joint security team is in process of registering all guns in the country where it urged members of the public not to get threatened as it involves a process of shooting live bullets.

She later added that the team doing the registration exercise is comprised of Uganda peoples defense forces, police force, Uganda prison's, Uganda wild life authority, External security organization, Internal Security Organization, private security organization and individuals.

She adds that the exercise is to capture data of each individual gun and matching the data of the holder. She says that this will make the work of tracking guns easier after their use.

Namaye says that tomorrow the team will embark on registering guns in Katonga region where the whole exercise is expected to end in July 2019 country wide
