Uganda Human Rights Commission wants the government to fully fund its activities so that they can be able to deliver on their mandate as they are tired of begging  foreigners.

While handing over  two  reports to the speaker  of Parliament Jacob Oulanyah, the  chairperson of the commission Mariam Wangadya, said that  the commission's  the  biggest funder DGF has not been in operation for the last one year which has greatly affected their work.

Wangadya said  that government funds to the commission are mainly for administrative duties but other core activities like investigations, tribunal hearings, research and field work are not funded.

She noted  that it is their desire to see the commission deliver on its mandate without donor support, saying that the government should fully fund their activities so that they can maintain their dignity.

Wangadya informed the speaker that  when it comes to funding the commission needs affirmative action .

She revealed that  the commission now has a funding gap of 15.8 billion shillings to enable them fully  function.

The speaker of parliament Jacob Oulanyah in response advised the commission to ensure that  their reports stop looking at the human violations on the streets of Kampala but further investigate deeper into those issues that affect the people in the villages because they are the majority but their issues are not addressed.
