Women entrepreneurs have been encouraged to form cooperatives and supplier groups to compete favorably in public procurement processes.

The call has been made by Sophia Nassali Masagazi, the manager of Advisory services at Procurement and Disposal of Public Assets Authority (PPDA) during the annual women in business achievers awards and gala dinner held in Kampala

The advice comes amidst concern by women that the government procurement for goods and services has tended to favor big suppliers and contractors, ignoring the small companies.

Nassali says women entrepreneurs miss out on accessing lucrative government procurement due to limited capacity because they are not united.

She adds that one  of the barriers to women participation in public tenders,  is little knowledge and skills required to do business with the government coupled with limited capital.

We have been advising the women entrepreneurs especially in terms of solving challenges they face while filling bidding document or finances, to partner.

The chairperson of Uganda Women Entrepreneurs Association Limited (UWEAL) Dr. Barbara Ofwono Buyondo noted the awards were aimed at recognizing women who have excelled in entrepreneurship to motivate them to carry on and inspire others.

"This year is so special because we have had COVID 19, many businesses have closed, many have been stack but these women here have remained resilient and cop up with the COVID19 effects so as to remain in business that’s why we have to celebrate them", she added.

The International Labor Organization, through its project on Women Entrepreneurship Development and Gender Equality (ILO-WEDGE), in collaboration with women entrepreneurship associations in Uganda, formed a partnership designed to widely promote the role of women entrepreneurship development. Through this concept, the women entrepreneur associations in Uganda dedicated the month of November as the ‘Month Of The Woman Entrepreneur (MOWE’).

During this month , a combination of different events ranging from capacity building, business exhibitions and advocacy forums are carried out, with an aim of creating an enabling environment for women entrepreneurs, promoting the role of women entrepreneurship development and recognizing the potential and achievements of women entrepreneurs in generating employment and income
