At least 25,079 refugees in Yumbe and Adjumani districts in West Nile have been facilitated to access mobile phones, sim cards and financial services.

This is in line with Airtel Uganda’s efforts to increase access to digital services among refugee communities in Uganda.

Commenting on the progress made in the region, Mr. Amit Kapur, the Chief Commercial Officer at Airtel Uganda, noted that this strategic financial inclusion effort has brought positive changes not only in the lives of refugees but also the host communities.

According to him, refugees require a support system to sustain their well-being rather than depending only on government, charity organizations and development partners.

Reports from the United Nations, shows that 1.1 million refugees call Uganda home, making it Africa’s largest refugee hosting country.

Refugees account for at least 50% of the total population in Adjumani and Yumbe districts.
