Legislators asked to emulate justice Aweri's contribution

The Speaker of Parliament Anita Among has asked legislators to emulate the contribution made by the late Supreme Court Judge Ruby Opio Aweri in serving humanity.

Parliament on Tuesday held a special sitting to pay tribute to the late justice who died last week at Mulago  national referral hospital in Kampala.

The casket containing the remains of Justice Ruby Aweri arrived at parliament in the afternoon and was received by the Speaker of Parliament and will lay in state overnight.

“Justice Opio has left society better than the way he got it. He has left the judiciary better than he got it” said Speaker Among who chaired the afternoon special session.

Legislators stood in silence as the body of the late justice was wheeled into the parliament chamber for the special sitting .

Speaker Among described the late learned friend as a man who served  his country with distinction , honesty,  and integrity adding that his legacy will always stand tall.

The Speaker, Ministers and legislators then laid their wreaths on the casket to honour justice Ruby Opio Aweri .

The government chief whip Hamson Obua said “his track record was clear wherever he worked, a friend to many, inspirational and readily available. He served Uganda with precision, he has left a legacy”.

Dokolo South member of parliament Felix Okot Ogong said the late Aweri, who was his uncle loved the environment .

“ My uncle planted  close to 300,000 trees in Lango and other parts of the country. So let us plant trees in his memory” said Hon. Okot

He further asked legislator to emulate the humility and simplicity that characterized the life of Justice Opio Aweri, and the way he conducted his work.

Justice Ruby Aweri served the judiciary for 39 years  and will be laid to rest at Acungapeny Cell in Agwata Town council  in Dokolo district on Friday 16th December.
