Senior Police Officer Arrested for Aggravated Robbery

A senior police officer has been arrested for participating in a robbery together with civilians and a UPDF officer.

According to the police Chief Political Commissar, senior commissioner of police Hadija Namutebi  the  incident that happened on September, 19, 2023 when  a group of five men including a police officer at the rank of assistant superintendent, a UPDF officer with pistols and other civilians who were travelling in a super custom vehicle with MK Army number plates robbed $317,900 ( 1.1 billion shillings) at Nakirebe along Kampala-Masaka road.

Namutebi said when the victims of the robbery reported the matter, police kicked off investigations and they got footage from a CCTV camera , and intelligence which led to the arrest of four suspects.

The four have been identified as Lubega Moses, Nuwagaba Josephat, Kyomuhendo Richard and ASP James Kakana the former OC station for Namayingo police station.

She noted that on arrest, the suspects admitted participating in the robbery and a search in their homes led to recovery of the vehicle  Super Custom model  registration number UAW 187  that was used in the robbery.

The car had been  disguised with a sticker, another vehicle, a Subaru registration number UBN 291 A bought using the robbed money , household items including sofa sets, TV sets, cooking utensils and other items were also recovered

Namutebi said the senior police officer was later arrested from Nansana in Wakiso where he was hiding  after escaping arrest at his station in Namayingo .

"We condemn in the strongest terms where a person entrusted to protect lives and property of Ugandans and people in Uganda turns against them to participate in such a manner. It is an individual capacity and doesn’t in any way represent the police,” Namutebi said.

She noted that police will follow up the matter until the suspects get the deserved punishments.

In another robbery matter, a  Chinese investor identified as  Hei Wei was robbed off US dollars 190,000 ( 690 millions) by a group of thugs using Bodaboda along Sezibwa road near Fang Fang hotel.

The  victim had used Boda Boda from his residence  in Kololo and it's suspected the same rider was on surveillance.

Police managed to arrest one suspect from Kisenyi, and  upon searching his home, they recovered 3700 US dollars and Uganda shillings 1,000,000 .

The e hunt for accomplices is still on going.
