The family of the late John Mukidi, who tragically lost his life when a Uganda Peoples Defence Air Force helicopter crashed into his home, has been provided temporary housing for six months while the damaged residence undergoes reconstruction.

The incident occurred on January 2, 2024, in Karugutu, Ntoroko district, resulting in the deaths of two pilots and a civilian.

The deceased pilots were identified as Lt. Swadik Aroma and Lt. Allan Tukamuheebwa. John Mukidi, the civilian victim, lost his life when the armed helicopter gunship crashed into his house on that fateful Tuesday.

Major John Naboth Mugisha, the Air Force spokesperson, has clarified that the UPDF is overseeing all burial arrangements for the civilian and the fallen pilots.

Both Mukidi and Swadik were laid to rest on Friday at their ancestral homes in Ntoroko and Arua districts, respectively. Lt. Tukamuheebwa's burial is scheduled for Saturday in Kabula, Lyantonde district.

Major Mugisha has emphasized that investigations are underway to determine the cause of the crash.

"The wreckage will be cleared once the investigation team has examined and assessed the site. The restriction of civilian access to the crash site aims to maintain the integrity of the scene for investigators to conduct an accurate evaluation and identify the factors contributing to the accident," stated Major Mugisha.

The crashed helicopter was equipped with rockets and bombs, some of which remained unexploded.

According to Major Mugisha , "Yesterday, a team of experts specializing in explosive ordnance devices conducted clearance in the area to prevent secondary accidents due to unexploded ordinances from the aircraft involved in the accident."

He urged patience, stating, "Let's wait for the investigators to determine the exact cause of the accident, ruling out technical error, human error, or machine malfunction," emphasizing the need for a thorough and comprehensive examination of the circumstances leading to the tragic event.
