Street Children: Karimajong Mothers Remanded to Prison

More than r  100 Karamojong mothers  have been arraigned before City Hall Court in Kampala and charged with sending their children on the streets of Kampala to beg.

The suspects were rounded up by KCCA enforcement officers from different streets  of the capital Kampala in a bid to realize a smart city. 

They were charged with sending a child to beg or solicit for alms in a public place contrary to the child protection ordinance 2022.

They denied the charges before Grade One magistrate Edgar Karakire .

He then  sent them on remand for a  month. because they had no sureties to stand for them.

According to the child protection ordinance , sending a child to solicit for alms carries  a maximum punishment  of six  months in jail.

They will return to court on the  29th  February 2024  for further  mention of their case.
