- The SACCO, is an autonomous, self-help organization controlled by its members, with no interference from Police authority since it operates under the patronage of the Uganda Police Force to improve officers’ welfare.
The management of the Police's Exodus SACCO has rubbished rumors that the police leadership always interferes with the day to day running of the SACCO.
On February 1st, 2024 the Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa directed the Committee on Defence and Internal Affairs to inquire into the operations of the Uganda Police Force Exodus SACCO.
This followed a statement by the Minister of State for Internal Affairs regarding involuntary deductions from Police officers' salaries for savings with the SACCO.
In the findings of the inquiry that were presented to parliament on February 2nd, 2024, along with recommendations, it was said that police management interferes in the operations of Exodus SACCO and police officers are forced to pay monthly savings through forceful deductions.
Now Senior Commissioner of Police Omoding Wilson the Chairperson of the Police Exodus SACCO rubbished these claims, noting that even though they appreciate the committee's findings, its report did not adequately address the journey, achievements, and challenges of the SACCO from 2020 to date which includes increased member participation, loan and savings growth, and financial empowerment.
The SACCO, he says is an autonomous, self-help organization controlled by its members, with no interference from Police authority since it operates under the patronage of the Uganda Police Force to improve officers’ welfare.
The SACCO's operations are guided by the law on cooperatives and the registrar of Cooperatives at the Ministry of Trade, Industries and Cooperatives.
“Exodus SACCO maintains an updated membership register, prioritizing accuracy and reliability to comply with regulatory requirements outlined in the Cooperative Societies Act,” he says.
According to Omoding the SACCO remains committed to transparency, accountability, and member autonomy.
"We appreciate the Committee’s recommendations and assure stakeholders that appropriate actions have been taken to address each point" says Omoding.
"We express gratitude for the support and guidance from regulatory bodies, stakeholders, and members. As we progress, we remain dedicated to continuous improvement, responsiveness to feedback, and excellence in serving our members and advancing the cooperative movement."
