Parliament to support funding and passing of the Red Cross Bill

The Speaker of Parliament the Rt Hon Anita Among has pledged to team up with members of Parliament to support the passing of the Uganda Red Cross Bill into law.

After passing the bill the role of Uganda Red Cross Society will be enshrined in law.

The Ugandan Parliament passed the Uganda Red Cross Society Bill in March 2021, however, it has never been accented to by the President.

The bill seeks to legally formalize the auxiliary role of the Uganda Red Cross with the Government of Uganda and other public authorities.

It will legally recognize the Uganda Red Cross’ auxiliary role across disaster risk management and humanitarian response in situations in Uganda.

In a speech read for her by Hon Herbert Edmund Ariko, the MP Soroti East constituency, the speaker says strengthening the role of Uganda Red Cross reinforces the foundation of its mandate by allowing the organization to operate more effectively and efficiently. 

Robert Kwesiga the Secretary General of the Uganda Red Cross Society says the new Act is a significant step for the Uganda Red Cross Society to improve their reach and help vulnerable communities.
