Outbreak of Conjunctivitis Reported in Kampala.

The Director Public Health and Environment at Kampala Capital City Authority-KCCA has advised the public of an out break of Conjunctivitis (red eye disease) in Kampala.

According to KCCA ,several  cases have already been reported in some  schools and education institutions.

KCCA is advising parents, students and the general public to follow preventive guidelines so as to control the spread of the disease. 

This includes frequent hand washing with water and soap,avoiding touching or rubbing your eyes.

The public has also been advised to avoid shaking hands and close contact with one another.

Schools have also been directed to ensure screening of visitors coming to the schools and institutions.

The public has been asked to  immediately report suspected cases to the nearest health facility .

Symptoms of conjunctivitis (pink eye) can include;Pink or red color in the white of the eye(s),swelling of the conjunctiva (the thin layer that lines the white part of the eye and the inside of the eyelid) and/or eyelids.

Increased tear production, feeling like a foreign body is in the eye(s) or an urge to rub the eye(s) are the other symptoms. 

Conjunctivitis can be  caused by viruses, bacteria, allergies, a chemical splash in the eye or a foreign object in the eye.
