Hundreds of villages remain missing or are poorly mapped across the country according to the Uganda Bureau of Statistics.

With 30 days left to the National Population and Housing Census due on 10th May 2024,the Bureau is struggling to complete district budgets sooner than later.

During the training for trainer’s workshop at Speke Resort Munyonyo, the Executive Director of the Bureau Dr. Chris Mukiza appealed to the district representatives to quickly finish the listing exercise.

“Today we have completed 97.6% of the entire country, remaining with 2.4%.We have given all the district representatives where they have not completed an ultimatum of one week so that we can complete the enumeration areas and the budgets for the districts”.

The purpose of the training is to ensure that the officers get accustomed to the tablets, link questionnaires and how to understand the concepts of what they will be capturing.

“The most difficult concept to capture is the census night, the trainers will have to explain to you what it is and the context of that night because it where the all questions related to the household of the individuals will be referring to.”

“Once that is finished then, next will be defining a household and after understanding those you will transmit similar information. We have brought you here (in reference to the over 600 trainers) so that you get the same information at the same time without distortions.”

“Our expectation is that during these eight days you should be very keep to understand all these concepts. For example how you approach a household which has lost a loved one,” remarks Mukiza.

In regard to preparedness more tablets are anticipated in the country next week and the bureau has started installing the software and applications on their system and by census night, Dr. Mukiza says, “we shall be able to conduct a successful census”.
