Traders Protesting EFRIS Close Shops in Kampala

Business in down town Kampala has come to a halt as traders conting with their sit down strike  protesting the URA  enforcement of  EFRIS system of collecting VAT tax.

The traders in Kampala unanimously agreed to close their shops and have been joined by other traders in  Masaka, Mukono, Hoima, Mubende especially those who subscribe to  Kampala City Traders Association-KACITAA

The traders also are complaining about  value added tax, investors in retail business, poor methods of levying tax by URA , violation of trade order where manufacturers especially Chinese end up in whole selling and retailing.

Others reasons for the closure of business include high import values which is making it hard for traders to clear their goods among others.

Shops in the central business district are closed while traders have seen standing around their shops and arcades.

Thadius Musoke Nagenda KACITA chairman says that they opted for peacefull protest as they plan  to petition parliament, through the speaker, office of the prime minister, minister of finance, trade ministry and the president.

On part of security the deputy police spokesperson of Kampala Metropolitan Luke Owoyesigyire says that they have deployed effectively to see that no chaos or violence erupts in city.

The police is jointly deployed and monitoring the situation with the support of sister security forces.
