Uganda hosts the Global Symposium for Regulators (GSR-24).

The Vice President of the republic of Uganda Rt Maj Jessica Alupo has retaliated the need for communications regulators to promote the sectors position but to also working towards the  economic well being of the people.

this could be through fast tracking the use of artificial intelligence, robotics and digital financial services.

She made the remarks while speaking to delegates attending the Global Symposium for Regulators (GSR-24) at the  speak resort munyonyo.

Maj Jessica Alupo who represented President Yoweri Museveni urged telecommunications operators to expand communications services to every house hold level by making ICTs accessible and affordable to all which in turn will bring down the cost of doing business.

Approximately 800 delegates, including some of the world’s leading telecommunication and ICT regulators, policymakers, and industry leaders are attending the symposium, which provides a platform for conversations on emerging issues with a view to strengthen the impact of regulation of the telecommunication and ICT sectors in the digital age.

The delegates are expected to share experiences and exchange ideas on the best regulatory practices and policies, guided by the overriding theme, ‘Regulation for Impact.The theme underlines ITU's commitment to creating a regulatory environment condusive to innovation while prioritizing the safety, privacy, and rights of digital users worldwide.

The four-day meeting is organized by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) - the United Nations specialized agency responsible for ICTs. The ITU is the oldest organization in the UN system, having been established in 1865, long before the UN itself was born, and is Based in Geneva, Switzerland.

Besides topical discussions, GSR-24 features an exhibition by industry players from across the world. Uganda recognizes the vital role that ITU plays in shaping the global ICT agenda and is not only a member, having joined in 1963 but an active participant in the UN agency’s activities.

Being the first time that such a meeting is being held in Eastern Africa Uganda, hopes to engage with global ICT stakeholders on key issues associated with our priority areas such as consumer empowerment, cybersecurity and data protection, broadband access, and digital transformation.

Hosting the Global Symposium for Regulators is a significant milestone for Uganda as it underscores the country’s position as a leader in the ICT sector within the region, on top of attracting international visibility and business.
