The Minister of Health Jane Ruth Aceng has been summoned to appear before parliament and address the concerns of intern doctors including delayed deployment.
In his communication to the house this afternoon, Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa said that he had received numerous complaints from medical interns regarding the Ministry of Health's failure to post them for their internships.
The delay has left many students who have completed their studies without practical training, sparking concerns over the impact on the healthcare sector.
Tayebwa also questioned whether financial constraints or a shortage of training centers are causing the delay. The Ministry of Health requires Shs80.4 billion to facilitate the deployment of 1,901 medical interns awaiting training.
Early this year medical interns under their umbrella body, the Federation for Uganda Medical Interns threatened to stage an industrial action due government's failure to fulfill its pledges.
In August 2021 President Museveni directed that all medical interns be paid UGX 2.5 million half of what the senior doctors get, a directive which has never been fulfilled.
On July 29th 2024, the under-secretary of the Ministry of Health Kenneth Akiiri revealed that his Ministry had earmarked 35 billion shillings for the allowances of the next cohort of medical interns expected to be deployed this month of August.
He said the money was for more than 2000 intern doctors, nurses, Midwives, and pharmacists who will be placed to serve in hospitals for one year.
