The pre-trial hearing for police officer SP Arinaitwe Gilbert Bwana, a high-ranking police officer charged with aggravated trafficking in persons, has been postponed to October 17, 2024.

The delay comes as state attorney Joseph Kyomuhendo requested additional time to present evidence to the defense.

Arinaitwe, who gained notoriety in 2011 for his brutal arrest of opposition leader Col. Kizza Besigye, faces serious allegations involving the sexual exploitation of Namukasa Joan.

The charges stem from an incident between June and July 2023, during which Arinaitwe is accused of fraudulently recruiting Namukasa under the pretense of employment.

According to court documents, Namukasa, who had previously been living under challenging conditions, was contacted by an unidentified woman offering a job in Kampala.

Upon arriving, she was taken to Arinaitwe's home in Nalumunye, where he allegedly subjected her to multiple sexual assaults, including instances at gunpoint.

Evidence presented in court includes DNA samples matching those found on the victim, along with other physical evidence, such as clothing and personal items.

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) asserts that Arinaitwe exploited his position to recruit Namukasa under false pretenses, ultimately using her for sexual exploitation.

Arinaitwe, who is currently attached to the Crime Intelligence Headquarters in Kampala, was initially committed to trial by Buganda Road Court Chief Magistrate Ronald Kayizzi.

The case has drawn significant attention due to Arinaitwe’s previous controversial actions and the gravity of the current charges.

The rescheduled pre-trial is expected to provide more clarity on the prosecution's evidence and the defense’s response.
