Monica Akello, a 29-year-old resident of Mulimira Village, Bukoto, has been remanded to Luzira prison by Buganda Road Court following accusations of child theft.

Appearing before Chief Magistrate Ronald Kayizzi, Akello pleaded not guilty to the charges and will remain in custody until September 4, as investigations into the case continue.

The prosecution alleges that on August 5, 2024, Akello fraudulently took a seven-day-old baby, Aryano Gladys, from her parents, Namusana Miriam and Moi Mark.

Akello reportedly convinced the parents that she would introduce them to an NGO supporting breastfeeding mothers and young children.

She misled the parents into visiting Mulago Hospital for a birth certificate, then took the baby with her to Kamwokya.

The baby was only recovered on August 13, when Akello led police to her residence in Mulimira Village, where she was apprehended and the baby was returned to her family.

The court proceedings continue as authorities seek further clarity on the case.
