- This will make the leaders accountable to all parties rather than the majority opposition party.
- Some Mps say Lumu is using the Ammendment to fight personal war with current opposition leader Joel Ssenyonyi.
Mityana South County MP, Richard Lumu was was granted permission from Parliament to introduce amendments to the Administration of Parliament Act.
His proposed amendments would allow all opposition parties in Parliament to elect the Leader of the Opposition and the Opposition Chief Whip.
Lumu argues that this change would make these leaders accountable to the entire opposition rather than just their own parties.
Entebbe Municipality MP Michael Kakembo has supported Lumu's proposal, believing it could strengthen and unify the opposition in Parliament.
However, some MPs, like Okin Ojara of Chwa West and Nakalit Dennis from Kitgum Municipality, have opposed the motion, suggesting it is driven by Lumu's personal issues with the current Leader of the Opposition.
They argue that personal grievances should not influence national legislation.
Despite the differing opinions, Speaker of Parliament Anita Among has upheld Lumu’s right to seek leave to present his motion, stating that there is nothing improper about his attempt.
