Cement manufactures say the introduction of Digital Tax Stamps (DTS)by the Uganda Revenue authority will play a significant role in reducing the smuggling of construction materials especially cement into and outside the country.
Speaking to journalists in Kampala, Mr. Heet Raval, the Simba cement marketing manager has noted that there has been a lot of smuggling of cement before the introduction of DTS especially at the board points.
“The Digital tax stamps have considerably helped to curb counterfeit products on the market. The rampant fake construction materials like cement that used to flood the market have been drastically reduced”. Mr Heet said.
He noted that the DTS will serve as a catalyst to ensure that prices of the construction materials such as cement is made affordable to the community.
Reports from Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) show that Between October and December 2023, URA enforcement teams have intercepted 3,286 bags of smuggled cement, which is equivalent to 164.3 metric tones.
