The Electoral Commission (EC) has officially announced the program for by-elections in Kisoro District.

These elections will fill the vacant seat of the District Woman Representative to Parliament and positions for Local Government Councillors in areas where vacancies exist.

The by-election process will kick off with an update of the National Voters’ Register, which is scheduled to take place from Friday, 27th September to Tuesday, 1st October 2024.

Voter registration updates will occur at designated stations in each of the 71 parishes/wards across Kisoro District. Voters wishing to transfer their polling stations or register for the first time must do so by the cut-off date of Tuesday, 1st October 2024.

Following the register update, the Voters’ Register will be displayed from Monday, 14th October to Wednesday, 23rd October 2024  at all 322 polling stations in the district.

Additionally, any recommendations from the Parish Tribunal for the inclusion or removal of names from the register will be displayed from 23rd to 28th October 2024.

For candidates aspiring to contest in the by-elections, the nomination period is set for Wednesday, 30th October, and Thursday, 31st October 2024 at the District Returning Officer’s office in Kisoro. Successfully nominated candidates will then have the opportunity to conduct campaign meetings between 1st and 12th November 2024.

Polling and tallying of results for Special Interest Group councilors will occur on Monday, 11th November 2024, while the main polling day for the District Woman Representative and other Local Government Councillors is scheduled for  Thursday, 14th November 2024.

The by-election for the District Woman Representative seat follows the unfortunate death of the former MP, Hon. Nyirabashitsi Sarah Mateke, who passed away on 7th September 2024.

The Electoral Commission urges all eligible voters in the Kisoro District to participate in these important electoral processes to ensure their voices are heard.
