NARO Develops fast growing Seed varieties for Karamoja.

The vice President of Uganda Maj Jessica Alupo has appealed to Ugandan farmers to  adopt modern, sustainable farming practices and focus on diversified production.

Vice President, made the remarks while officiating at activities to observe the united Nations world food day held in the eastern district of Serere where she launched  the new fast growing  climate resistance  seed varieties .

The new varieties of G nuts are  Naronut 3R, Naronut 4R and Naronut 5R while the ones for beans are Nabe 12 CR and Nabe14R.

These varieties  were developed by Ugandan scientists at  the National Semi-Arid Resources Research Institute (NaSARRI) in Serere District in eastern.

Based on the year's theme, "right to food for a better life and better future", the vice  president emphasized that the public should reflect on the right to food as a basic human right-one that is central to improving the quality of life of all Ugandans, and creating a prosperous, food-secure future as the country will be  secure of food and income.

Hundreds of people have turned up at the National Semi-Arid Resources Research Institute Serere for celebrations .

The Director General National Agriculture research institute Dr. Yonah Baguma with over  10 years' experience in agricultural research and development says National Agriculture Research organisation is continuing to develop a number of food varieties to ensure that the whole country comfortable with food security.

The National Semi-Arid Resources Research Institute is located in the Eastern Agro-Ecological Zone ( Teso sub region) in Serere district 27km South of Soroti.

World Food Day is an international day celebrated every year worldwide on October 16 to commemorate the date of the founding of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation in 1945.

The day is celebrated widely by many other organizations concerned with hunger and food security in Uganda celebrations spear headed by the National Agriculture research organisation (NARO) .
