Alarming Food shortage hits Karamoja,Teso and West Nile.

Civil society has asked government to take serious measures to address the serious food crisis that the country is facing .

This follows the recent National Population and Housing Census report that reveals a serious food crisis in various parts of the country.

Persistent low levels of food and livestock production associated with climate-related shocks and hazards have significantly contributed to  Karamoja being the  most vulnerable region in Uganda.

The report indicates the most vulnerable areas comprised of Karamoja, Ancholi in Teso, in West Nile, and some parts of Kabale.

The 2023/24 crop production season yields were below average due to a series of prolonged dry spells which reduced availability of pastures for livestock and induced migration to the neighboring districts.

Speaking at the National high-level policy dialogue in Kampala, Agnes Kirabo the executive director foodrights alliance says there is urgent need for practical interventions from governmet to avert the crisis.

besides the challenges ,there is hope that the food insecurity situation will improve due to a number of interventions .

This is as a result of succesfull research by the  National Semi-Arid Resources Research Institute of (NARO) which has developed fast growing crops for semi arid areas.

The policy dialoge organised by the foodrights alliance mainly discussed challenges and possible  solutions of ensuring food security and creating a sustainable future for all.
