Students Urge Gov't to regulate Digital Learning Platforms

In Summary
  • Digital platforms are not entirely safe especially for the girl child.
  • Government should rethink and ensure regulation of these digital platforms

School going children who are currently at home due to COVID19 outbreak have urged relevant government authorities to ensure regulation of the Digital learning platform to safeguard innocent children that use them.

Speaking ahead of the International Day for the Girl Child under the theme, “Is Digital learning enabling Children enjoy the Right to education”, school going children say that digital platforms subject them to unpleasant content which distracts them from learning and therefore undermine their right to education.

Addressing the press conference today led by Paula Staicy, students under High Sound For Children a civil society Organization noted that whereas digital platforms would be an option for learning during the covid19 pandemic, the platforms are not entirely safe especially for the girl child.

Therefore they are calling for the authorities’ intervention to ensure that online content is suitable for children in order to secure the digital learning platforms if the children are to enjoy their right to education.

Godfrey Busobozi, the chairperson of the Coalition of Uganda Private School Teachers Association who concurs with the children’s concerns, says it is high time the government rethink and ensure regulation of these digital platforms which are not compatible with Uganda’s situation for the enjoyment of the right to education.
